Massage Descriptions
Muscles are bundles of fibers that produce movement by contracting and relaxing. When a muscle contracts and fails to relax, it is referred to as a “knot.” When a muscle contracts, blood flow is reduced and blood is what delivers oxygen to your muscles. By applying deep pressure to contracted muscles, the massage therapist forces the muscle to relax and restores blood flow so that the healing process can begin.
Deep Tissue Massage
This massage technique is an intensive hands-on therapy that is based on applying pressure to deep muscles to release knotting and restore blood flow. Please note that deep tissue massage is very intensive and can be uncomfortable. It is expected for the patient to experience some soreness the next day, this soreness is your sign that blood flow has been restored and the muscle has begun to heal. If you have not experienced a deep tissue massage before, ask your massage professional for a short demonstration or sample.
Traditional Swedish Massage
This classic technique uses 5 different types of long strokes to manipulate muscles. Here in the USA we refer to it as Swedish, while in the rest of the world it is known simply as “Classic Massage.” Swedish massage is used to shorten recovery time after muscle strain and aids in improving circulation. It also stimulates the skin (resulting in that wonderful after-massage glow) and stretches the body ligaments and tendons. Pressure can range from light to firm, please let your massage therapist know your preference.
Sports “Prehab” Therapy
This massage is designed for the serious athlete to focus on staying OUT of rehab. The concept of “prehab” is gaining major ground in the world of sports medicine. “Prehab” is focused on preventing injury before it happens through range of motion, flexibility, and stretching. This massage makes an excellent companion to full Prehab training regimen that includes strength training, balance, and specific focus on weakness that makes the athlete to injury. Prehab keeps the doctor away!
Sports Therapy Massage
Sports Therapy Massage uses both Swedish Massage techniques as well as some Deep Tissue Massage techniques depending on the needs and/or injuries of the athlete. This massage is not just good for athletes! Weekend warriors can benefit too from some restoration and recovery, especially if your enthusiasm is being dampened the joys of aging. Be sure to discuss with your massage therapist what sport you participate in and any chronic injuries or pain, this way your therapist can customize the massage techniques for the most benefit.
Acupressure Therapy Massage
Acupressure therapy uses the fingers to apply pressure to key healing points of the body. When these pressure points are activated, they release stored toxins that are then flushed out of the system. Releasing the body pressure points helps increase circulation and improves relaxation. The Acupressure technique was developed 5000 years ago and is based in the same philosophy as Acupuncture of body meridians and pressure points.
Headache Therapy Massage
This massage technique focuses on releasing pressure from your head, neck, and shoulders. These muscles are responsible for holding up your head – which weighs between 8 – 12 lbs! The muscles of the head and neck control the fine motor movements of your head and they are where most of us store most of our tension. Sleeping in a bad position can also result in those muscles being in a shortened position overnight and leave you with a raging and painful headache in the morning. With this technique we focus strongly on the trigger points in the suboccipital muscle group, which are the muscles under the back of the skull.
Pregnancy Gentle Massage
This massage technique uses classic Swedish Massage strokes to help relax the expectant Mother. This gentle massage is experienced while laying on the side and is designed to especially relieve the parts of the body most strained by pregnancy, such as the back. Studies have shown that massage therapy during prenatal care helps reduce hormone levels associated with stress. Those changes in hormone levels made for fewer complications during births in both Mother and child. Many women have reported significant reduction in back pain during pregnancy when regular massage is introduced.
Aromatherapy Swedish Massage
This massage is our classic Swedish Massage taken to a level of luxury with generous applications of aromatherapy. Use of essential oils dates back thousands of years and these highly concentrated plant oils have been used to alter mood, cognitive function and health. As you inhale the essential oils, the aromas stimulate the limbic system and can affect stress levels, memory, the immune system and blood pressure. There are several types of essential oils that are usually added to massage oils for Aromatherapy Massage, please let your me know which healing properties you prefer.
